National Organization letter to WNY LAM Foundation.
To our family, friends, and LAM supporters,
In 2004, our family was hit with some shocking news. At the young age of 25 Katie, our daughter, sister, niece, cousin, friend, was diagnosed with Lymphangiomioliomatosis (LAM). After years of being misdiagnosed, the confusion and frustration of not knowing what was wrong, countless hospital and doctors visits, we finally found an answer...and the answer was devastating.
As of this moment, there is no cure for LAM. LAM is a progressive lung disease and has claimed the lives of many of the women who spent so many years fighting. In 2006 we decided to form the WNY Friends of the LAM Foundation and our mission was very simple, and very clear -
"The purpose of the WNY Friends of the LAM Foundation is to raise awareness of LAM, and raise funds, all of which are donated to LAM research to ultimately help find a cure/treatment for LAM."
For those of us who are fighting on behalf of Katie and all of the other LAM patients in the world, we know that it is a tough battle and there are many obstacles that get in the way of our mission. LAM is a very rare disease, therefore patients and spokespeople are limited. For uncommon diseases, funding is limited as well.
This is where you come in.
We are very proud to be able to say that with your help, we have raised over $40,000 over the last four years. Beginning in 2006 the WNY Friends of the LAM Foundation has held an annual fundraiser - A Taste of Winter Wine event, held in February. Because of those events, and generous donations throughout the year, we have been able to raise funds, and more importantly, raise awareness about LAM. The more people who know about LAM, the more people we have to help us fight the battle against it, and help find a cure.
This year, we're hoping that our event will be bigger and better than ever. The 2010 Evening of Hope is being held at a new, exciting venue in Buffalo, NY, we have great food, music, wine and fantastic auction items. We hope to see you and your friends and family there. Please visit the site, check out photos from past events, learn more about LAM, LAM funding and research, about this year's event, and how you can help.
Thank you for your support,
The McKenna Family
